Head of Wellbeing – Mr Wade Richardson

2023 will be an exciting year for wellbeing at Macquarie with the rollout of our Wellbeing Framework.

One key aspect we are aiming to introduce into the school is the use of Positive Psychology. In the world of positive psychology, the PERMA+ theory of wellbeing is a widely recognised framework that highlights the five key elements of a fulfilling life. The acronym PERMA+ stands for Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment and the + refers to Health.

Positive Emotion refers to the experience of joy, contentment and satisfaction. Schools can foster positive emotions by encouraging activities and conversations that bring students joy and promoting a positive school culture.

Engagement refers to the state of being fully absorbed and present in an activity. Schools can promote engagement by providing opportunities for students to pursue their passions and interests.

Relationships are an essential part of our lives and play a crucial role in our overall wellbeing. Schools can promote positive relationships by fostering a sense of community and encouraging positive interactions between students, teachers and staff.

Meaning refers to the purpose and significance we find in our lives. Schools can help students find meaning by providing opportunities for them to explore their values and beliefs and encouraging them to pursue a sense of purpose.

Accomplishment refers to the sense of achievement and progress we experience when we set and reach our goals. Schools can foster a sense of accomplishment by setting achievable goals for students and recognising their successes.

+ (Health) refers to our nutrition, optimism, physical activity, sleep and digital wellbeing.

Schools can help educate students on the importance of these factors and provide them with the opportunity to develop their problem-solving and decision-making skills in order to lead healthy lives. Students will be introduced to each element during assemblies and they will build upon their skills in Tutor time for Senior School and Core time for Junior School. On top of this staff will be upskilled on integrating this theory of wellbeing into their teaching practice and in our day to day interactions in the playground and on excursions. The Newsletter will be a space where parents and caregivers will be provided with ideas to utilise Positive Psychology at home with the aim of creating authentic partnerships between school and families.
