German Students Travel to Sydney
Macquarie has a rich breadth of subjects for students to choose from as they enter Stage 5, and then again in Stage 6.
Many elective subjects come with excursion opportunities that allow students to fully immerse themselves in the course content. In Term 2, Stage 5 German students travelled to Sydney to visit the Goethe Institute and to experience traditional German food, history and culture. Here is what German students Sabrina Jones, Year 9, and Danielle Rice, Year 10, had to say about their adventure:
"Guten Morgen, mein Name ist Sabrina, und das ist Danielle. Last Tuesday the Elective German class got the opportunity to go to Sydney for a German excursion or Ausflug in German. We arrived at our accommodation in time to drop off our bags and head to dinner at a German-style restaurant called The Bavarian. The food was lecker (delicious in German), and I think we all agreed that the traditional pretzels were wunderbar! After that we took in the sights around Darling Harbour, and got ice cream and pancakes at the famous Pancakes on The Rocks restaurant.
After breakfast the next day we headed to the Goethe Institut, which is an institute that helps promote and teach German language and culture. While we were there we had the opportunity to see a piece of the Berlin Wall on display. We learned about its history, and we explored Germany’s history through some virtual reality headsets, allowing us to feel immersed in the location.
After that we went to the Palace Cinemas on Norton Street in Leichhardt to watch a new German movie called One in a Million, a story highlighting the impact of social media and connecting globally online.
This excursion allowed us to expand our knowledge of German culture, and was a great opportunity to get to know one another better and develop a strong class bond.
A big Vielen Dank to Frau Garland for everything she did to make it happen and Mr Murphy for being our amazing bus driver."
