One of the capabilities within the Macquarie Teaching and Learning Framework is the ability to focus.
In a world teeming with distractions, focusing our attention on a specific task or goal has become an art in itself. When we concentrate our mental energy on a single objective, we create an environment where deep learning and understanding can thrive.
This doesn't just apply to studying; it's a valuable skill in every aspect of life, from work projects to personal relationships. Focusing involves directing our attention and mental energy toward a specific task or goal. It’s about immersing ourselves in the present moment, blocking out distractions, and devoting our cognitive resources to what truly matters.
Focusing sharpens our understanding, enhances our learning and amplifies our productivity.
Students who are good at focusing are willing and able to:
- Be attentive to details and subtleties in order to understand things
- Seek underlying patterns patiently, understanding that connections take time to emerge
- Actively use all their senses to gather information to build an understanding of the world around
- Gain a clear sense of the ‘what’ of something before considering the ‘why’ and ‘how’
- Recognise that learning is often complex and difficult and takes time and effort to accomplish.
