Term 4 has seen the very exciting launch of an eBook compendium of teaching strategies, written for and by each staff member at Macquarie!
The project was inspired by the work of Professor Guy Claxton, specifically, his work on building learning power. Professor Claxton’s work aims to build learners who have agency and longevity and are able to apply their skills to any situation. This is also what we want for our learners at Macquarie. In building these skills in our students, at Macquarie we use the language of ‘resourceful, relational, resilient and reflective’.
Our eBook aims to cover teaching strategies for each ‘R’ that we use at Macquarie. Each teacher has been assigned with researching a strategy, testing its effectiveness with their students, and revising as needed.
Teachers then wrote a short summary of their strategy, including what it looks like when students are successfully using it in the classroom, along with links to further reading and research. In preparing this eBook, students have built their persistence muscle by learning about the ‘power of yet’ by Carol Dweck. They have learned to see the word ‘fail’ as the ‘first action in learning’. They have learned to use the pomodoro technique to improve their time management. Junior students have been using visible thinking during ‘think, see, wonder’. All students can benefit from the power of positive self-talk. We are looking forward to utilising these strategies as we move forward in our powerful learning journey.
