Kindergarten is more than just an introduction to the world of education; it’s a pivotal stage where children develop foundational social and emotional skills. At the heart of this development is a sense of belonging and the relationships it forms. Research consistently shows that these elements are crucial for a child’s overall wellbeing and academic success.

A sense of belonging in the classroom is essential for young children. When children feel they are a part of their community, they are more likely to engage actively and confidently in their learning. One of the ways that we do this at Macquarie is to foster strong relationships. This aligns with the Macquarie Teaching and Learning Framework relational disposition.

Kindergarten students are blessed to work with both Year 6 and Year 12 buddies on a weekly basis. The buddy system is a powerful tool that enhances the educational experience for both our Kindergarten and older students. Our buddies have been instrumental in helping students make a smooth transition into Kindergarten by providing a familiar face and a sense of companionship. Pairing students together as buddies fosters a strong sense of community. Our buddies provide a positive role model by demonstrating kindness, patience and respect. We have seen our Kindergarten students grow in confidence with the care and support of their buddies.

Within our week, we participate in buddy sport and recess with Year 6, and Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) with Year 12. Students are assigned buddies for the duration of the year and it is truly lovely to see these relationships grow.
